Offwind

A non-commercial Research Project of IRIS (International Research Institute of Stavanger) that was sponsored by NER (Nordic Energy research) and VattenFall.

The solution works on offshore wind farms based on water and mainly covers such aspects as research, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, database processing, and visualizations.

The project was aimed to build software solution on an open-source platform based on integrated models for offshore wind farm layout optimization.

Project Highlights

6 months

from wireframe to public release

10 partners

working on a solution around the world

3 simulation models

were incorporated into single User Interface

The Research Project brought together Universities from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Germany, and the US. A key outcome was the development of software for power prediction from offshore wind farms.

The challenge of universities’ representatives was design and creation of a math model for simulation process and further verification of the model on real data.

Curious project-specific requirement was development of Open Source Code solution, which would be available for energy industry experts and engineers.

The project included the development of user interface for more convenient analysis of data obtained during the CFD simulations.

To achieve goals, NRGSoft team had to deepen their knowledge in this domain since we needed to understand what would be the best way to visualize all the available data.

In collaboration with the client, we set up a list of any possible scenarios and decided to divide interface by two levels of permission performing separate tasks. The first level was Engineering Tool, the second one – Advanced Level.

Moreover, this decision was also based on the difference in requirements for the backend of each level. Because of simulations, Advanced level required high-load processing that is better to perform in cloud environment while Engineering Tool could be implemented as a web platform.
